Straw hats and unicorn dogs. It’s what’s trending…

Over the Labor Day weekend, I attended Big City Events’ Summer of Rum Fest in downtown Tampa, at Curtis Hixon Park. What a view! The weather held out, and we had a beautifully steamy summer day for rum tastings, live music, and loads of local fashion on display.

A view of the famous minarets at The University of Tampa, from the VIP hospitality tent.

My trend-spotting was on high alert for festival wear..and Tampa did not disappoint! I saw so many cute hats, great sunnies  – which is a quick and easy fashion statement, made more fun with all the great options out there! From cat eye frames to mirrored lenses, sunnies were a pointed pop of personality on each wearer’s face.

I am excited to share with you some of my favorite looks of the day!

I love everything about this look. The high waisted shorts, the hat, the duster…and her clear acrylic bag with “Buccaneers’ scripted on the front. Her own design!                                                   (Get Stoned by Denise ) Wouldn’t you know I run into an accessory designer 😉

More short shorts; this time with a fringed cut off and gladiator sandals. Simple black halter and it all works.

Another super cute fedora with short shorts and she’s right on trend with a neon top and wedges.  Her oversized earrings are perfect with her hair tucked up under the hat.
Hats – especially straw fedoras – were in abundance, as were spectacular sunnies!😎
Case in point! Great big sunnies, straw fedora, and a strong red lip! You know I’m loving that!
Here’s what I love about fashion: it doesn’t have to cost a fortune. With a simple head wrap that she bought at Target, and these super hipster clear acrylic framed sunnies from H&M, she pulled together a look that is totally on point.

Lots of short rompers..and strappy flat sandals. Super young and cute.

I just love the drape of this jumpsuit. So chic. The accessories complete the story; lots of bangles, cute wedges and a simple turquoise tear drop pendant.
Its was HOT, y’all! Lots of topknots, short shorts and bare shoulders. It’s the only way to bear the heat.
Because this outfit was so simple, it really caught my attention. I loved the casual distressed denim, I loved the saddle leather, flat sandals and the simplicity of a white strapless bodysuit. But what really pulled it all together was the pop of color from her cotton sweater knotted at the waist, and her woven Mexican tapestry crossbody. The little touches like the oversized hoop earrings and the apple watch with white strap were just perfect.

So, you may be wondering what I wore to this event. I knew it was going to be hot hot hot…so I opted for white denim bermudas with a crushed cotton babydoll top in daffodil yellow with off white macrame trim. White hoop earrings, a pair of white Esprit thong sandals, and I was set. I only regretted the sandals when I stepped into the grass where the remnants of the prior day’s rain remained. Ugh. Mud. Again. The hazards of living in a tropical climate. (wouldn’t trade it for the world.)

Fortunately for me, Curtis Hixon has a lovely water park for the kids, but who says the grown-ups can’t play in the water? Perfect way to cool off and rinse the mud off my toes.

My best fashion accessory? A cute boy who was visiting Tampa from Baltimore, who loved the big old moonshine truck as much as I did and didn’t mind posing for a picture!

As promised, there was a unicorn dog. Yes, dyed from head to toe with a magical horn and all. This was the most dramatic fashion statement I saw all day!
